Spiritual Cleansing
Limpieza — spiritual cleansing — is one of the most important practices in curanderismo, used to clear negative energy that has accumulated from difficult experiences, interpersonal conflict, environmental influences, or unseen spiritual disturbances. Curanderas believe that unprocessed grief, sustained anger, and exposure to toxic environments can create energetic blockages that manifest as persistent fatigue, recurring illness, or a general sense of bad luck. The practice of limpia (cleansing) addresses these conditions using sacred tools: Copal resin burned as incense, its aromatic smoke believed to carry prayers and offerings to the divine realm; Palo Santo wood used to smudge spaces and individuals; Ruda (rue) leaves hung over doorways or burned to remove harmful influences. Spiritual cleansing ceremonies may combine multiple tools — herbs, crystals, sacred oils, and prayer — to address mal de ojo (evil eye), susto (soul loss), or general spiritual heaviness that manifests as fatigue, illness, or misfortune. These are practical healing tools within the curandera's repertoire, not superstition.
