About this Remedy
Boswellia resin — the sacred incense of the ancient Mediterranean world, adopted into curanderismo for grounding and protection. While copal is the primary resin of Mesoamerican limpia, frankincense appears in communities with Afro-Caribbean and Levantine heritage influence along the Texas-Mexico border and coastal Veracruz. Used for deep spiritual protection, trauma clearing, and creating sacred stillness. The smoke settles around a space rather than rising — creating an atmosphere of settled calm ideal for healing work. The Badianus Manuscript (1542, Barberini MS Lat. 318, fol. 25v) documents Boswellia among the plants of the New World pharmacopeia, noting its use for wound care and spiritual purification by indigenous healers — establishing frankincense in the Mexican healing record from the earliest colonial sources.
Traditional Use
Burned as resin on hot coals in a copalera. Placed under the bed or in corners for ongoing protection. Used in the final stages of limpia ceremonies — after copal and palo santo have cleared heavy energy, frankincense seals and protects the space. Applied topically (diluted) for joint pain and inflammation. Small resin pieces worn as protective amulet.
