About this Remedy
Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana) is native to Mexico and Central America — the Mexican elder is distinct from its European cousin but used nearly identically. Curanderas in Trotter & Chavira's 1981 ethnographic study (Curanderismo: Mexican American Folk Healing) recorded sauco tea as a standard home remedy for gripa and tos.
Traditional Use
Flowers and berries brewed as tea for gripa, catarro (head cold), and tos ferina (whooping cough). Flower infusions used for fever. Bark decoctions applied for swollen joints. The syrup from cooked berries is a modern revival of what grandmothers knew: sauco concentrates and strengthens the immune response during cold and flu season.
